Religious Program
In addition to providing religious teaching, the Religious Program involves the provision of non-formal education. Studies of development in the Asian SAARC societies such as Indonesia , Maldives as well as Pakistan have shown that non-formal education in a religious setting has a high success rate hence, alongside religious education, basic Urdu teaching is being provided as an important step towards increasing the literacy rate in Pakistan.
The Religious Program also incorporates charitable and welfare activities ranging from providing food to deprived children and young people as well as their communities to bearing financial/material responsibility of the marriage arrangements for deprived young women.
Currently the Religious Program has been implemented on the premises of the Foundation as well as in the Katchi Abadi of Maskeenabad. Following a survey of Maseenabad it was decided in accordance with popular demand to establish a religious and education centre in the area. Over sixty children composed of both boys and girls attend the center regularly, where in addition to being taught the Quran, they are also taught the Urdu Qaida. At present one teacher has been employed there full-time.
As part of the charitable activities of the Program, every Friday
food is provided to the centers children, which helps in improving the nutritional standards of their diet.
Educational Program
The Dilpazeer Foundation Education Program is operated through formal education being sponsored through the Foundation’s Sponsored a Child Scheme to deprived children and young people at local schools.
One overall criterion has been determined for all processes of selection. This includes the following:
- Definition of Deprived children and young people
- Main Variables: (1) Age (2) Gender (3) Program Quota
- A unanimous judgement on part of the panel
The deprived child or young person in general, constitutes someone who comes from the
poorest of the poor communities, and is engaged in child labor.
Vocational Training Program
Under the Training Program a Trade School has been set-up to provide training in vocational skills in market oriented Fashion, Arts and Crafts leading to product exhibitions at the local, national and international levels in order to generate an income not only for its trainers and trainees, but also to raise funds to re-invest in the future development of the Training Program.
So far the Foundation has established one workshop on its own premises where in spite of the limitations in the equipment available, a tailor master and a cutter have been employed. It is hoped that eventually they will train eligible deprived young people in this skill to equip them in life.
The development of the Trade School workshop is still under development. However, in December 1998/January 1999 the Foundation’s Trade School launched its first trial international product exhibition in London, which proved successful in raising £1000 sterling for the Trade School. It also increased the organisations profile in the United Kingdom as a result of which the organisation is presently exploring the possibility of being registered there with a full fledged Board of Governors to among other agenda formulate policies towards the success of the Trade Schools exhibitions.
The Dilpazeer Foundation has also initiated trade-training facilities as part of its Education and Training Center for \Women in the Kathci Abadi of Maskeenabad. At Education Center there, young and adult women not only receive non-formal basic education but also some training in embroidery under the Fashion Arts and Crafts Program. The number of attendants to date stands at thirty.
Community Development Program
Based on the premises that Community Development is a mechanism or process as well as a Program, the Foundation has developed this Program and others. The Dilpazeer Foundation believes that Community Development is the key in making any progress and thus gives importance to working directly with the children and where applicable their families and communities, to ensure their full participation, understanding and commitment to develop themselves.
Various members of the Pirwadahi community have been approached by the Foundation and meeting have been held in which the Foundation has introduced itself and explained the purpose of the Sponsored a Child Scheme as well as explored possibilities. A number of principals and teachers at the local schools have given an assurance of complete co-operation in this matter. Furthermore, one school has offered the help of their scouts to volunteer some time to the Foundation in preparing a list of eligible candidates for the scheme.
Local businesses have also been approached in order to form and build a base of support and potential sponsors.
At the present time the Foundation is focused in the Katchi Abadi of Makeenabad, where Community Development has taken priority. Fieldwork is emphasized.
